This is awesome. The $50 billion investment by Softbank into US businesses has been celebrated by the incoming administration. This is great news, as they are looking to create 50,000 jobs.
However! Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son has stated the fund's purpose is to bring about the Singularity. In layman terms, it's when artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and machines run our every day lives.
He explains in his annual investors meeting that within 40 years, in every aspect of every industry - doctors, lawyers, designs, etc. - that he's expecting artificial intelligence will exceed the wisdom of human beings.
He goes on to say "They will exceed key people in small and large firms… Sometimes they can be smarter or brighter, so sometimes we should follow what they say."
The early morning news was greeted in Japan with a mix of awe at the pure size of the proposed investment, and cynicism at why Son was pitching it. “The administrative official wants jobs, and the merchant wants power,” said one Twitter reaction.
