Want To Grow Your Startup? Don't Focus on Growth.

In the earliest stages of your startup, I believe that you need to focus on creating something that consumers love. Marketing an tracking growth should not be a priority.

Successful startups create wealth by creating a product desirable to the consumer and by growing their user base. Only after that should focus be placed internal and external growth.

Take for example Facebook and AirBnb. They created products that people obsessively talked about, growing their business exponentially through word of mouth, rather than using inorganic marketing schemes, such as advertisements to maintain user traffic.

Emphasize the product and rapidly test it. Emphasize on making the consumer fall in love with whatever you're making.

If you first make sure your product is loved, it will be much easier to grow. Users will be easier to retain, and they’ll tell others about what you’ve made. Your users essentially become a free marketing and sales force for you. Your chances of building a giant company are much higher when you have a product that spreads by word of mouth.
